There are reasons guns have safety locks. There are reasons we have a Food and Drug Administration, a Consumer Product Safety Commission, laws, intelligence agencies, police, and military. It’s for our own safety. But Republicans are dismantling many of our protections on behalf of billionaires and corporations.
Republicans have been using ICE, Border Patrol, and even our military to endanger us. They are even creating fake programs purported to protect us, but the “Board of Peace” and the “Shield of the Americas” whose members are tinpot authoritarians, are just grifts to line Trump’s pockets and threaten innocent civilians.
U.S. intelligence agencies are now led by Trump and Russia-aligned flunkeys. This week, news of an FBI warning that Iran may attack California set off alarm bells. My immediate reaction was that FBI director Kash Patel was using the Iran war to threaten our great blue state and the world’s fourth-largest economy. I tweeted this theory immediately and several other pundits soon followed. It turned out that the FBI warning was an old unverified tip from before the current Iran war that was released only to inform law enforcement.
The public alarm forced White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to make an official announcement admitting Iran was NOT an imminent threat to the United States, contradicting Trump’s main reason for the illegal invasion. But the fact that so many legitimately suspected the FBI might be using the Iran war to threaten a blue state illustrates how many of us feel endangered by our own government.
Also this week, the FBI failed to stop two terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, and Republicans refused to end the 27-day shut-down of Homeland Security five times, blocking bills offered by democrats to fund TSA, FEMA, CISA, and the Coast Guard, while Congress negotiates funding for ICE and CBP. All of this on top of Republican attempts to pass the SAVE Act that would disenfranchise voters nationwide, while Florida passes a state-level test-run of the same.
There are less than 235 days before the midterms and Republicans are running out of time. Mark Elias has already vowed to challenge the new Florida law and any other GOP attempts to steal the midterms. The Purcell principle holds that federal courts cannot change state election rules shortly before an election, to prevent voter confusion.
Republicans are desperately threatening and endangering Americans at home while starting a costly war abroad trying to create a fake reason to postpone the midterms. But by all indications, the GOP has reached a critical mass of corruption that has turned Americans against them. Democrats have flipped every election since 2024 while Republicans have flipped none. The Republicans have now endangered themselves.
